How do I move the BackupAssistv7 ProgramData folder to another location?

By default BackupAssist writes its configuration, reports, history and temporary data to C:\ProgramData\BackupAssist v7\. On some machines the size of the C: drive means that this location isn't optimum and the following allows you to define an alternative location for BackupAssist to use.

1. Stop the BackupAssist service under Control Panel > Administrative Tools > Services.

2. Choose Start -> Run and type "regedit"

3. Add the following string value under HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Cortex I.T\BackupAssist\vX\ (where X is the version number you're running of BackupAssist):

DataPath=<desired path>

e.g. DataPath=D:\BackupAssistData\

For example...

4. Make a backup of the current data directory (ie. zip up “C:\ProgramData\BackupAssist v7\”).

5. Move (or copy) the data directory contents to the new location (ie. “D:\BackupAssistData\”).

6. Start the BackupAssist service under Control Panel > Administrative Tools > Services.

Once you've done this the data will then be directed to the specified location in the registry key.

Additional Comments:

Changes to your registry can cause fundamental issues in Windows and we would always recommend that prior to any modifications a backup of your registry is made.
